What does the RVC Friends of MLK do?

Since our creation in 2020, we have focused most of our support on the children in the community. In the future, we envision working with our seniors, teenagers, and everyone in between. If we can dream it, we can make it a reality!

Our Library

We have set ourselves the goal of building a library of children’s and Young Adult books by Black authors. Our dream is to have the biggest collection on Long Island. We want our kids to have access to the whole world through literature.

Wreath Making

RVC Friends of MLK has been responsible for providing seed money for several initiatives that have been embraced by the community. Every holiday season, we come together to create wreaths to decorate our doors. Whether it’s deep reds, greens, and blues or the pastel shades of spring, we’re sure to have a festive look!

Chef Academy

We provided the seed money for this wonderful program that helps kids learn how to create a meal and go on to enjoy it together. Professional chefs join Ms. Sharon and Ms. Karen as they share their love of cooking and community with the children.

Sharon’s Squad

Sharon’s Squad provides mentoring for teen girls in the form of externships with local professionals, lots of moral support, and an end-of-year celebration of all their achievements. We are so proud of the accomplished women they are becoming!

Photography

The children are given cameras and encouraged to look around their world and take pictures of what interests and inspires them. The photographs are proudly displayed at our Community Day Art Show.

Art

We select professional artists whose work we believe will inspire the children. Check out some of the amazing artwork the children created when Reginald Laurent was our inspiration!
